We have been learning about money over the past few days and today we had our first store station. I gave the students time to chose the items they wanted to "buy" with their plastic money and then record their choices on a "Show Me the Money" erasable sheet that I made. We had such a great time learning how money is added to match the price of the items we wish to buy. We also had someone come in this week and teach us all about earning and saving our money.

Students were given the opportunity to discuss and explore how advertisements are made to appeal to a certain demographic. We brainstormed groups that an advertiser might create their ads for and characteristics of things those groups might like. Students were quick to think of ideas for children and teens and we worked together to look at groups like adults, teachers, parents, girls, boys, doctors, etc. Afterwords students chose their own demographic and an object for their table to create poster ads to try and sell. They were expected to explain their choice afterwords including the name of their product, descriptive words chosen and price chosen.
This mat has been a fun tool for our younger learners as we explore number sense. Students have had fun creating the numbers from 1 to 100 and then playing various games like "guess my number".
In an effort to teach skip-counting by 2s, 5s and 10s in a more creative way I introduced "Frederick the skip-counting frog". Frederick's main problem is that he can never quite find his way home and always needs our help to place his lily pads for him to hop back to zero. I would pretend to get a phone call from Frederick who would tell us what number he was stuck on. Students would then place the lily pads as we explored if he could skip-hop by 2s, 5s and 10s. Students would raise a red light if an path was unsafe and a green if Frederick was allowed to start hopping back. This also allowed me to see when students might not be getting the concept and do a formative checklist assessment.
Technology is not necessary at all times, but it can be great to enhance a learning experience. With webquests and other great tools we have been able to add a technology station to our math stations.
We have been teaching texture in Art. One of the lessons that my students really enjoyed was our "UP" inspired puff-paint lesson. We used a homemade paint in four colors (that I made the night
Some items that are often the focus of our curriculum can be enhanced using anchor charts. The following are some smaller ones that help students remember our daily math strategies.
![]() Today I made an anchor chart for my students to use in writing. They often come to me with questions about what to do once they have finished their writing or how to know if they are done. With all 18 students that are working below grade level from our three grade two classes in my writing workshops I needed to create a tool that they could Here is a sneak peak at our literacy lesson for tomorrow. We will be using the "h brothers" to explore the sounds that "ch", "sh", "th", and "wh" make. These fun faces give our students visual cues for the sounds and shapes our mouths make when we read these letter combinations. |
